It was scorchingly hot in the sun, and we found shade whenever possible and drank a ton of water.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_477\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-477\" style=\"width: 300px\" and the remains of the architecture nothing short of amazing.\u00a0 This place is better known for the 900+ rebel Jews that resisted the Romans and holed themselves up on Massada surviving on stores of food after the Roman conquest of the rest of Israel.\u00a0 They eventually chose death over slavery on the eve of the Romans taking their little village- each man killing his own wife and children before taking lots to see who would be the last man to fall on his own sword.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/israel.naef.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/0930massada4.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-478 aligncenter\" another dip in the Dead Sea, rinsed off &amp; drove through Arat to an oasis where we spent the night.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Stay at Kfar Hanok-Dim<\/strong> (an oasis!)<\/p>\n<p>[We drove over an hour to go what would have been 10 minutes if we could have cut through the mountains. \u00a0The landscape views were spectacular!]<\/p>\n<p>After checking in and resting for a bit, we had a camel ride, <img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-466\" where we were greeted with\u00a0the hospitality of the Bedouins &#8212;\u00a0a coffee roasting ritual, and talked with a man whose family have been there for 700+ years.\u00a0 He has 3 wives, many camels, donkeys and goats.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/israel.naef.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/0930bedouin.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-462\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/israel.naef.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/0930bedouin.jpg?resize=457%2C343&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"0930bedouin\" greet their guests openly and take the protection of them very seriously.\u00a0 The 3 coffees served to a guest are: 1. We welcome you in, 2. Our sword (we will protect you while you are here), 3. We are glad you\u2019re here, we enjoy your company, enjoy your time.\u00a0 None of these cups will be filled to full, and they will be served in very small (smaller than a demitasse) cup \u2013 ours were beautiful white china with small pink flowers and gold stripes.\u00a0 If you are served a full cup, it means \u2018we are ready for you to leave.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/israel.naef.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/0930coffee.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-469\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/israel.naef.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/0930coffee.jpg?resize=300%2C225&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"0930coffee\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/israel.naef.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/0930coffee.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/israel.naef.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/0930coffee.jpg?w=773&amp;ssl=1 773w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>They also served a very yummy, very sweet Bedouin tea which was minty. \u00a0The girls drank a lot of this.<\/p>\n<p>[oops, Kati has more to say about the camels&#8230;] The camel ride was great!\u00a0 I think my teeth were dusty from my constant smiling.\u00a0 We all loved it.\u00a0 I now have quite an affinity for these crazy looking creatures.\u00a0 They can carry 300+ pounds, run all day &amp;
